Background of the Study
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a major public health concern globally, with a rising incidence in developing countries, including Nigeria (Adebayo & Tijani, 2023). CKD is characterized by the gradual loss of kidney function over time, eventually leading to kidney failure if not properly managed. The disease is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and economic burden due to the high cost of dialysis and kidney transplantation (Usman & Bello, 2024). In Nigeria, the prevalence of CKD is on the rise due to the increasing incidence of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus, which are major risk factors (Okonkwo et al., 2023).
Kebbi State, located in northwestern Nigeria, has a predominantly rural population with limited access to quality healthcare. The burden of CKD in the state is poorly documented, but existing hospital-based reports suggest a growing number of cases, particularly among individuals with poorly managed hypertension and diabetes (Olaniyan & Adeyemi, 2023). Other contributing factors include herbal medication abuse, untreated infections, and exposure to heavy metals from contaminated water sources (Chukwuma et al., 2023). Despite the growing prevalence, there is a lack of comprehensive epidemiological data on CKD in Kebbi State, which hinders effective policy formulation and healthcare planning.
Understanding the epidemiology of CKD in Kebbi State is crucial for identifying at-risk populations, improving early detection, and implementing preventive measures. This study aims to examine the prevalence, risk factors, and patterns of CKD in Kebbi State, providing valuable insights for healthcare interventions.
Statement of the Problem
Chronic Kidney Disease remains underdiagnosed and underreported in Kebbi State due to limited awareness, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and poor screening programs (Adebayo & Tijani, 2023). Many individuals present at advanced stages of the disease when treatment options are limited and costly, leading to high mortality rates (Usman & Bello, 2024). Additionally, the interplay of environmental, genetic, and lifestyle factors contributing to CKD in the region has not been thoroughly studied.
While existing research highlights hypertension and diabetes as primary risk factors, the role of other contributing elements, such as traditional medicine use and environmental toxins, remains largely unexplored (Olaniyan & Adeyemi, 2023). The lack of localized epidemiological data makes it difficult to implement targeted interventions. Thus, this study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the prevalence, risk factors, and patterns of CKD in Kebbi State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Kebbi State.
2. To identify the major risk factors contributing to CKD in the region.
3. To assess the level of awareness and preventive practices related to CKD among residents of Kebbi State.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in Kebbi State?
2. What are the primary risk factors associated with CKD in Kebbi State?
3. What is the level of awareness and preventive measures regarding CKD among residents of Kebbi State?
Research Hypotheses
1. The prevalence of CKD in Kebbi State is significantly high due to undiagnosed risk factors.
2. Hypertension and diabetes are the leading contributors to CKD in Kebbi State.
3. Low awareness of CKD significantly contributes to delayed diagnosis and poor health outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on hospital records, community-based surveys, and risk factor assessments in Kebbi State. However, limitations may include limited access to medical records, reluctance of patients to participate in the study, and logistical constraints in reaching remote communities.
Definitions of Terms
• Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A progressive loss of kidney function over time, potentially leading to kidney failure.
